Why Join Sigma Chi?

The fundamental purpose of Sigma Chi is to cultivate an appreciation and commitment to the ideals of friendship, justice, and learning.

Academics

A study done at Oklahoma and Oregon State Universities show that fraternity men are more likely to earn a degree than non-affiliated students. Sigma Chi strives to maximize the potential of all brothers and pledges in their scholastics. This is done through the forms of study tables, tutoring, and time-management. A Sigma Chi realizes that scholarship is his first duty; he went to college to get an education.

Community Service

Aristotle once said, “In the arena of human life the honors and rewards fall to those who show their good qualities in action.” Sigma Chi has been a leader in fraternities for providing philanthropic service and support for over for over 27 years. At Kent State University, the Sigma Chi’s participate in a weeklong philanthropic event involving other Greeks, known as Derby Days, to help raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network.

Brotherhood

At Zeta Lambda brothers possess different temperaments, talents, and convictions. In Sigma Chi, you will form not only form many friendships, but you will also form a brotherly bond with each of it’s members. It is these friendships, this brotherhood, Sigma Chi gives to each of its associates. This friendship, this brotherhood, is a lifelong bond, not a four-year program.

Sports

In the fall of 2010, the Zeta Lambda chapter of Sigma Chi will be involved in many different intramural sports (volleyball, basketball, and flag football). Playing sports among brothers is a great way to build sportsmanship, friendship and just to have an all around good time.

Leadership

85% of Fortune 500 executives,

85% of the U.S. Supreme Court Justices since 1800,

76% of U.S. Congress members,

and 98% of ALL U.S. Presidents since 1825,

...were all fraternity men.

As you can clearly see, being in a fraternity builds leadership skills. In the fraternity, you will be "in charge" of an event or a duty. Everyone in the fraternity is a leader, whether you're an officer, an executive, on a committee, or just a participant. You will learn by doing. You'll learn how to manage a budget, run effective meetings, speak in public, motivate others... skills that will help you in college and throughout your life. These days it takes more than just a degree to get a good job - it takes leadership experience, and by running for an office in a fraternity, you can get as much as you can handle.

About Rush…

Rush is a very important time for Sigma Chi, and for all those interested in joining. It is a time of opportunity for people to meet the brothers and find out more about Fraternity life. Sigma Chi does not just limit themselves to rushing individuals who want to join a fraternity. We also like to welcome those who are interested in finding out what we stand for and who we are. Joining Sigma Chi is a way to develop strong friendships, meet many people on the Kent campus, and a unique way to grow as an individual.

During Rush, many events are held to welcome those interested in Sigma Chi. Some events include dinners, bowling, BBQs, etc. The more events that an individual comes to, the better chance that person has to decide whether Sigma Chi is the right place for him. There is no pressure placed on individuals rushing the Zeta Lambda Chapter. Our goal is to create a friendly atmosphere so rushees get to know the brothers.

Fall Rush at Kent State University will last the first three weeks of school. Each fraternity, at this time, may present individuals a bid. Those who accept the bid are given the opportunity to pledge Sigma Chi for the semester. Each bid is valid for one full year, so for those individuals who unsure about pledging, they have more time to think it over and decide. Spring Rush for fraternities at Kent State University start at the beginning of the second semester (this rush has a more informal set-up with campus).

If there any questions dealing with our rush during the Fall Semester please e-mail Alfred Yarbrough, or call the house phone at 330-678-1212.

FAQ…

Q. How does Sigma Chi feel about hazing?

A. There is a zero tolerance for hazing in Sigma Chi! Hazing neglects the fraternity and what it stands for – BROTHERHOOD, BUILDING CHARACTER, HIGH MORALS, AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY.

Q. How many hours a week will I have to devote to Sigma Chi?

A. There is one mandatory pledge meeting per week, which is a requirement to become an active member. All additional activities are optional, but pledges are encouraged to attend philanthropies, socials, and other events to make the most of their pledge experience.

Q. Will Sigma Chi be a financial burden?

A. Every pledge and active member alike is treated as an individual when it comes to finances. The treasurer tailors payment plans and will do whatever he can to accommodate pledges personal financial needs.

Q. What should I expect during my pledge experience?

A. One can expect their pledge period to last approximately three to four months. During that period, a pledge absorbs all the meanings and proceedings of Sigma Chi. This is a very critical time for a pledge.

Choosing a Fraternity

During the rush period of the fraternities, the individuals interested in joining will have the opportunity to visit as many houses as they feel interested in. It is encouraged, during this period, to visit all the houses. By doing so, an individual will get a feel for each of the values the fraternities stand for, making it easier for them decide which fraternity is right for them. If you pledge a fraternity for the wrong reasons, you may feel a loss of interest as you get older in your college career, decreasing your involvement in helping running the fraternity. The more involved the brothers in the fraternity are, the stronger the bond of brotherhood becomes. It is an important decision to decide which fraternity is right for you, the men you got to know during rush, may eventually, be calling you brother.

If you are still hesitant about which fraternities you might want to rush, check out these statistics about the Sigma Chi Fraternity:

About Us…

The Zeta Lambda Chapter of Sigma Chi at Kent State University was founded over 35 years ago. Over the years, the chapter has become stronger. The reason for this is because brothers do not see our Fraternity has a party playground, a way to pay for friends, or any other stereotype assigned to us. IT IS A BROTHERHOOD. Each brother will be there at any time of the day when help is needed; your shoulder to lean on throughout you college career and in your life down the road.

Diversity is also a main part of Sigma Chi. We believe in a brotherhood among members of different temperaments, talents, and convictions is stronger then a brotherhood among members with the same temperaments, talents, and convictions. In Sigma Chi, you are your own individual. Your pledgeship is not a time period where we train you to act like us, to be like us. Each brother contributes to the running of the chapter in their own special way.

Over the years, brothers have held many positions on Senate, IFC, and many other organizations on campus. Our chapter holds a week long philanthropy known as Derby Days, raising money for the Children’s Miracle Network. One year, the chapter invited all other fraternities and sororities to help build a playground at Locoy Elementary School. It is through this involvement with Greek and Non-Greek activities that Sigma Chi shows everyone who we are.

But words are only words, and nothing more...

If you are interested in finding out more about us, please talk to us in person. The door is always open, so feel free to stop by and meet our brothers. If you see a Sigma Chi on campus, feel free to stop him and ask him whatever questions you have. You are always welcome to stop by, get to know Sigma Chi.
